A sound financial plan does not guarantee a successful retirement.

As specialists in retirement planning, we have developed our own definition of retirement:

"Retirement gives you the freedom to achieve your yet unfulfilled dreams and goals on your own terms and in your own time."

In fact, whether you are a millionaire or living on a government grant, you have the same amount of time to spend in retirement: exactly 168 hours per week.

Most people retiring today can expect a retirement period of up to 30 years or more. That’s more than double the period of time you spent at school. Yet many people spend more time planning their annual holiday than planning their retirement.

Human beings are living longer, which means that while we used to think of retirement as the beginning of the end, we should now be thinking of it as a new beginning. Just as you may have made plans for your tertiary education, your career and your family, you need to make plans for your retirement.
